Welcome to Betary Reserve!
Infrastructure
On the Betary Reserve we have a research center run by IPBio – Biodiversity Research Institute where projects are conducted related to fauna and flora of the Atlantic Forest. Visitors are welcomed by our biologists and are given a brief overview of the topics we are studying.
greenhouse
Our greenhouse, with 600m² and a height of 9 meters, is a semi-controlled structure which houses all the typical habitats from the region. This wide range of habitat diversity attracts various species of amphibians which can be vizualized during our noctural visits. Moreover, in our greenhouse we have various terrariums where we keeps certain reptiles and amphibians from our region in captivity for research and visitation purposes.
Aquarium
Our aquarium was installed under an artificial lake of 500m2 where different aquatic rooms were created to develop research on native fish from the region. You can observe the main body of the lake by crossing wooden pathways constructed for a birds eye view of the aquarium. Additionally, the fish can be observed through five submerged windows in our underground tunnel.
Bioluminescent Mushroom Show
Our bioluminescent mushrooms can be vizualized outside during our nocturnal visits, however, we also constructed a dark room enabling day visitors to also see this spectacular phenonemon. In addition, the dark room can be used to demonstrate the flourescent effects of our scorpion and the phosphorescent glow of minerals.
Laboratory
Our laboratory is open for visitation so that the public can understand the topics we research. Moreover, the lab has various attractions such as our tarantula as well as various species of insects.
Pitfalls
Pitfalls are a method of field data collection for amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. Learn how research is conducted on the ground.
Nocturnal Active Search
Visitors, guided by our biologists, are taken to the aquarium and greenhouse at night to conduct an active search of amphibians. Their noctural habits means activity is high, especially during the summer when it is reproductive season, so visualizing various species is facilitated.
Trails
Betary Reserve offers 2 open trails for visitors and 2 restricted trails, with exclusive access to areas utilized by researches.
Deck
Our deck is a wooden platform stretching over the riverbank where visitors can swim in the Betari River.
